Sarah Ferguson made sweet tribute to Prince Andrew on wedding day with chic accessory

Jun 15, 2023Jun 15, 2023

Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew, both 63, tied the knot on July 23, 1986, at Westminster Abbey in London.

As well as her beautiful Burmese ruby engagement ring and her Lindka Cierach 17-foot wedding dress, the new Duchess of York stunned in two headpieces at her nuptials.

These two headpieces consisted of a floral crown and a classic diamond tiara, newly purchased for Fergie and Andrew's wedding.

This new diamond tiara, known as the York Tiara, was hidden during the royal wedding underneath a floral headpiece.

However, this move by the Duchess was deliberate, because it was reported at the time that she chose to wear a coronet of gardenias for a special reason.

Gardenias, a white, fragrant flower, were said to be a favourite of Prince Andrew's, meaning that Sarah had made a sweet gesture to her groom-to-be on her wedding day.

The flowers were also symbolic of the fact that Fergie entered Westminster Abbey as a commoner, and once she removed the floral crown and displayed the glistening York Tiara underneath, she became a member of the Royal Family.

The Duchess only removed the floral gown once she had signed the marriage certificate with the Duke of York.

Therefore, the York Tiara was significant because it symbolised Fergie's entrance into the Royal Family.

The diadem also had its direct origins in royalty, seeing as it was a gift to Sarah from the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

With a large five-carat diamond set on top, the York Tiara has delicate floral scrollwork.

The Duchess wore the stunning platinum piece on her wedding day as part of a larger Demi-Parure ensemble that also included a necklace, bracelet, and earrings.

Fergie, however, is not one to waste beautiful royal jewels. For the following 10 years, she wore the exquisite York Tiara on royal engagements, such as her trips to Australia and Canada.

Even after her divorce, Sarah continued to wear her wedding tiara at galas and events, such as Elton John's White Tie and Tiara Ball in July 2001.

In addition, the diadem has also been worn by other members of the Royal Family, including her eldest daughter Princess Beatrice who wore it at the most recent royal wedding in Jordan.

The wedding, which took place between Crown Prince Hussein and Princess Rajwa, was attended by Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

She paired the tiara with a gorgeous Reem Acra embellished satin gown that cost a whopping £2,560.
